A new addition to the Behavioral Health team. Ben Richards joined SVHC in February 2021 as a Mental Health and Substance Use Counselor. Ben received both his Bachelor of Social Work and Master of Social Work degrees from the University of Southern Maine.
Ben collaborates in practice with adults, adolescents, and families, using a variety of therapeutic methods. He completed specialized training in trauma-informed practice while counseling homeless youth at the Preble Street Teen Center in Portland, Maine, and Long Creek Youth Development Center in South Portland, Maine.
As a Substance Use Counselor, Ben respects each path to Recovery. He recognizes that it takes a team, both at SVHC and in the community, to meet the needs of individuals affected by substance use. Before a career transition to Social Work and Counseling, he spent nearly two decades managing several restaurants in Maine, most recently at Fore Street in Portland, Maine.
Ben is an avid reader and writer. He enjoys western and eastern philosophy, depth psychology, mythology, and economics. In his free time, Ben is devoted to his family. He enjoys backpacking in the mountains of Maine and New Hampshire, running, and playing guitar.
